More Than an Aerobatic Act

A Flying Story Your Audience Can Follow

Retro-Aero combines the unmistakable sight and sound of a Boeing Stearman with the story of the men and women who learned to fly during World War II. Vintage aerobatics, an original 1940s-inspired score, Captain D.C. Wolfe, ground engagement, and announcer-supported storytelling create an experience designed to engage spectators before, during, and after the flight.

Step Into 1943

The Audience Becomes Part of the Story

Rather than simply presenting a sequence of maneuvers, Retro-Aero places spectators inside the world of a wartime primary training field. The airplane, narration, Captain D.C. Wolfe, aerobatics, smoke, and an original 1940s-inspired musical score work together to give the performance context and emotional continuity.

An Original Score for the Story

The flying demonstration is supported by original pre-recorded music inspired by the 1940s and composed specifically for the Retro-Aero Stearman experience. The score follows the performance and helps connect the aircraft, narration, and aerobatic sequence into one continuous story.

The aircraft isn’t merely the subject of the story. It is the storyteller.

THE CHARACTER BEHIND THE STORY

Meet Captain D.C. Wolfe

Captain “DC” Wolfe portrays a WWII-era U.S. Navy Captain (O-6). In a historically informed WWII-era U.S. Navy uniform, he brings wartime naval aviation and flight training into selected ground appearances, aircraft-side storytelling, audience interaction and guest photography.

For Airshow Producers

Producer FAQ

Planning for the Coming Fall 2027 Stearman Airshow Experience

Is the Stearman flying yet?

Not yet. Restoration is still in progress, followed by return to flight, flight testing, aerobatic preparation, and the required airshow qualification. Target operational readiness is Fall 2027.

Does pilot Dale Melichar currently hold a Statement of Aerobatic Competency?

No. He is an airline captain and check pilot with ATP, CFI, CFII, and MEI credentials and more than 30,000 flight hours, but he does not yet hold a Statement of Aerobatic Competency. That qualification is a required milestone before any aerobatic airshow performance.

When do you expect the Stearman Airshow Experience to be operational?

The current target is Fall 2027. Readiness depends on restoration completion, return to flight, flight testing, proficiency, aerobatic preparation, SAC qualification, insurance, and operational readiness.

What happens if restoration or qualification takes longer than expected?

Producers will not be expected to carry Retro-Aero’s development risk. Pre-readiness bookings should include a readiness checkpoint 90 days before the event. If the aircraft or required qualification is not ready, the producer may cancel the Stearman performance without penalty, or both parties may agree to a non-flying heritage presence if that still provides value.

What does an airshow receive beyond the flying demonstration?

The flight is the centerpiece, not the entire product. A standard appearance is designed as a whole-weekend heritage experience combining vintage aerobatics with approved smoke, the WWII Training Field Experience, scheduled ground engagement with Captain D.C. Wolfe, original 1940s-inspired music, announcer integration, media availability, and appropriate sponsor and heritage programming.

Does the Stearman have smoke?

Yes. An installed and approved smoke system is available for the planned aerobatic presentation where operationally appropriate.

Are sponsor or public rides included?

No. Sponsor and public rides are not part of the core 2027 Stearman product.

Is formation flying part of the 2027 program?

No. The initial product is a single-aircraft experience.

What happens if weather prevents the flight?

Ground engagement, Captain D.C. Wolfe interaction, historical interpretation, photography, media participation, and selected event programming may continue when appropriate, but are not represented as equivalent replacements for the flying demonstration.

What makes Retro-Aero different from another Stearman act?

Retro-Aero treats the Stearman as the centerpiece of a complete story rather than simply an aircraft performing maneuvers. Vintage aerobatics, WWII training-field storytelling, Captain D.C. Wolfe, original 1940s-inspired music, ground engagement, and announcer integration continue the experience before, during, and after the flight and throughout the weekend.

How is the Cessna 190 Heritage Experience different from the Stearman Airshow Experience?

The Cessna 190 Heritage Experience is available now and is a non-aerobatic heritage product built around the aircraft, postwar aviation storytelling, audience engagement, and heritage and media integration. The Stearman Airshow Experience, targeted for Fall 2027, is Retro-Aero’s performance-centered World War II experience combining vintage aerobatics with training-field storytelling, ground engagement, and heritage and media integration.
